Why the black streaks come back
If you have dark vertical streaks running down the north or shaded side of your roof, that is a blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles, it spreads by airborne spores, and it holds moisture against the roof surface. Under heavy tree cover, which describes most of Belmont, Weston and Lexington, it comes back faster because the roof stays damp longer after rain. Pressure washing it off will strip granules and shorten the life of the roof. A soft wash uses a cleaning solution and low pressure to kill the organism instead of blasting it, which is why it is the method the shingle manufacturers sign off on.
